Cancer Control
During the emergence of NCI’s Center for Global Health (CGH), the Alliance was tasked to serve as CGH’s liaison to cancer control expansion throughout Central Asia. AECA established multi-sectoral partnerships between the World Health Organization (WHO), international cancer centers, and Eurasian Ministries of Health to ensure low- and middle-income countries in Eurasia had the necessary resources and infrastructure to develop comprehensive cancer control plans. This engagement led to the creation and revision of several national cancer control plans, including significant evidence-based changes to cancer control strategies that impacted millions of individuals throughout the Eurasian region.
AECA also served in a project management capacity, following up with stakeholders for several years to confirm national policies were aligned with proposed guidelines and that the bilateral program investment achieved its intended objectives. For her role in supporting initiatives that build cancer research capacity in resource constrained regions, AECA Executive Director Dr. Sophia Michaelson was awarded the NCI Award of Merit.
